Poor Prime Minister: Declining in Popularity

23 02 2007

The resignation of a short time appointed chairman of a special committee on self sufficiency Somkid Jatusripitak, triggered by harsh comment of the People’s Alliance for Democracy led by a media tycoon Sondhi Limthongkul, has frustrated the prime minister.

Sondhi Limthongkul is known to be backed by the National Security Council and as such his comment has been taken up seriously. If this is the case, it seems apparent now that the CNS not the appointed prime minister runs the country. The comment and disagreement of PDA that led to Somkid’s resignation was a slap in the face of the prime minister as it was his own decision to set up such special envoy. Watching the Thai politics today is like watching soap opera, no substance, it was only a fight between the good and the bad within the same family.

Public attitude towards the Thai prime minister has changed over the past few months. The latest poll showed that his popularity is in decline. Perhaps he is weighting his mind whether or not to continue his position as a Thai Prime Minister until the drafting of the constitution is finished and until the next general election is called for, if ever.
